Application Virtualization

Also known as Server Based Computing (SBC), application virtualisation is by no means a new technology.  It has been in existence for a great number of years in the form of Microsoft Terminal Services or Citrix MetaFrame or WinFrame products (now called XenApp).

Like all virtualisation based technologies, application virtualisation performs an abstraction, this time separating the application from the underlying operating system on which it is running.  That application is then made available to the user.  Application virtualisation can dramatically cut management and licensing costs as it allows IT to manage a single instance of each application from the within data centre. 

Applications are then delivered via application streaming directly to Windows PC’s for offline application virtualization or run on high-powered servers in the data centre for online application virtualization on any device or operating system. Whether online or offline the applications can be centrally managed.
